Manatee sighting for marine mammal lovers
Contributed by: Janylee McGlinchy on 12/9/2008

On Dec 6, 2008 I was resting on a bench at Loggerhead Beach State Park (the one that looks like a Gilligans Island hut). I have written poetry while sitting on this bench. It is a special place to me. "The Whisper of God" poem was created from this spot. Well, I was talking with a elderly friend of mine from Maine on my cell, when all of a sudden, I spotted something long and gray in the ocean, heading south. The lifeguard was leaving his post at about this time, and as he came up the stairs, I told him that I saw something in the water (in a concerned kind of way) and he said, "It's a manatee, and you have good eyes," and I smiled. I was thrilled at the thought of it. He/she was swimming along the shoreline at approximately 5:00pm. And do you know that is the very first time that I have ever, in my 24 years of living here in South Florida, seen a manatee in the ocean.
