Participants Get Jazzed for Komen Race for the Cure

Jazzercise Supports Komen with Race Warm-up, Dance-Fitness Teams for 19 th Year

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., (October 16, 2009) - As the Susan G. Komen South Florida Race for the Cure® begins each year, a group of Jazzercise instructors take to the stage to help participants warm up. The tradition, a healthy cardio boost that gets the crowd moving, represents Jazzercise's long-time support for Susan G. Komen for the Cure's® mission to end breast cancer: The fitness company has warmed up every one of Komen's 18 South Florida Races to date.

Jazzercise leads the 10-minute choreographed routine to get participants' cardio systems and psyches pumped. "We have everyone rocking. They're ready to walk," said Jeanette Mazzella, 65, a Jazzercise franchise owner in Palm City and breast cancer survivor who has participated on-stage in Race warm-ups for seven years. "It's a fun, fun way to start."

The 2010 Susan G. Komen South Florida Race for the Cure®, scheduled for January 30, 2010 in West Palm Beach, raises funds for Komen: 75 percent of the proceeds stay in South Florida and 25 percent support breast cancer research nationally. More than 22,000 people participated in the 2009 Race and raised nearly $1.7 million.

Ten to 15 Jazzercise franchises from Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties join into one main team to participate in the Race each year. "All the instructors bring their students and we have hundreds of girls. Everybody comes. It's awesome," said Franchise Owner Mazella, who is also an instructor. "We're there because we want to help."

Mazella was diagnosed with breast cancer on Valentine's Day 2008. "If I did not go for a mammogram, I would not be talking with you. That's so important," said Mazella, who works to raise money for women who can't afford mammograms or cancer treatment. "Cancer does not have to be the end. It can be the beginning of a new life."

Race participant Jackie Moynihan, 81, of Boynton Beach, has been a Jazzercise student for 30 years. "I'm just so pleased with Susan G. Komen, with all the strides they've made," said Moynihan, a breast cancer survivor who participated in the 2009 South Florida Race two weeks after undergoing a lumpectomy. "Not so long ago, I wouldn't have had the treatment I had." Moynihan credits Jazzercise with keeping her fit to ski the black diamond slopes each winter at Park City, Utah.
