Junior Achievement Selects Rising Star Finalists

Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches, Inc. has selected five talented graduating seniors who will perform at this year's WatchA Rising Star event on Nov. 14 at the Borland Center in Palm Beach Gardens. Theannual fundraiser begins with cocktails and a silent auction at 6:30 p.m.followed by dinner catered by Café Chardonnay and a live auction at 8 p.m. Thecost to attend is $150/per person.

The five finalists are Felipe Alou, Cardinal Newman; Erin Thomas, Dreyfoos School of theArts; Eva May, Palm Beach Central; Kelley McGillicuddy, Kings Academy; andPatrick Morley, Saint Andrews. They will compete for$5,000 in college scholarships at the annual Watch A Rising Star fundraiser,which is produced by Kathi Kretzer of Kretzer Pianos. The first placewinner will receive a $3000 scholarship; second place, $1,000; third place,$500; and fourth and fifth place, $250.

"One of the corevalues of Junior Achievement is belief in the boundless potential of youngpeople,"said James S Gavrilos, president of Junior Achievement of thePalm Beaches, Inc. "These five finalists for Watch A Rising Star represent whatis best in our youth. The annual event raises funds that ensure JuniorAchievement will be able to continue offering classes in financial literacy,work readiness and entrepreneurship to more than 22,000 students in Palm Beach,Martin, Hendry, Indian River and St. Lucie counties. All JA programs, whetherclassroom, or a student competition, help us prepare the next generation toenter and succeed in the global economy."

Local radio celebrity TimByrd will emcee the event, which also will honor businessman Greg Rice for hismany contributions to the local economy. A business leader, entertainer, andvisionary, Rice has made his mark in many fields. In addition to the instantlyrecognizable commercials that he and his late twin brother John wrote, producedand starred in for Hulett Pest Control, Rice has been a successful real estateagent, entrepreneur, television pioneer, and advocate for education.
