LOCAL AMERICAN RED CROSS CHAPTERS JOIN
TO RECRUIT SHELTER VOLUNTEERS
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (August 17, 2007) - During the height of hurricane season the Greater Palm Beach Area, Martin County and North Treasure Coast chapters of the American Red Cross are appealing to area residents to come forward, get trained and serve as shelter volunteers.
WHAT: A kick-off press conference will be held to ignite a massive volunteer recruitment drive for shelter volunteers throughout Hendry, Glades, Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and St. Lucie Counties. Volunteer Training Days will take place on Friday, August 24 and Saturday, August 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Training will include an overview of all Red Cross opportunities and shelter operations training. Trainings will take place at the three Chapter Headquarters in West Palm Beach, Stuart, and Vero Beach.

WHY: Volunteers are essential for the Red Cross to fulfill its mission. Making up approximately 96% of our workforce, volunteers carry out the life-giving mission of the organization. During a disaster all shelter staff are volunteering their time, while being supported by chapter staff.
