"Capt Joel" Kilmer - Big Dog Comics
on 1/14/2009
Due to heavy media coverage and I am sure a well planned add campaign by Marvel comics, the hype started early last Friday. The phones at Big Dog Comics in Fort Pierce were constantly in use answering inquires about Spider-man 583from Friday January 9 until the comics arrival on Wednesday January 14.
What most did not understand is that comic stores were told by their distributors that they had to order amounts of the regular Spider-man 583 that exceeded set numbers of previous issues. Only then would the store be allowed to buy copies of the "Variant" Obama cover.
The line formed early outside Big Dog Comics and the sales were brisk, that is for about 15 minutes. That is when the much sought after "Obama Spider-man" sold out.
This was not surprising as the books were bringing 35 -75 dollars on E-bay that morning.
Second prints will arrive next week if all things line up correctly. The cover image will be the same, only reversed and with a different color background.
Third prints are probably not far away since the hype for this book has not tapered off yet. The sleeper of the day was DC Comics Final Crisis 6. As DC had forewarned the comic fans months ago and with their current story line through the Batman titles, it was still shocking to see the Death of the Caped Crusader.
Long time customer and die hard Batman fan Josh Brainard was stunned and shocked at the news today. "I'm in shock here. I know they [DC] said they were going to kill him, but I never thought they would really do it. I feel a little nauseous as right now. Who...who will be the new Batman now."
As always things are always poppin' at Big Dog Comics so stop on in next week for new comics and a second print "Obama Spider-man" and maybe....a copy of the death of Batman. Hail to the Chief, and Rest in Peace Batman.
