Michael Bennett Matthews, son of Dana and Charlene Matthews won a Second Place Award in Creative Writing for his 4th Grade Haiku poem at Morningside Christian Academy in Port St Lucie, Florida.
Michael, a member of the Genesis Community Church located in Port St Lucie, FL placed second in the school wide grade competition for his Haiku poem - "
The Long Legged Black Spider".
Haiku is one of the most important forms of traditional Japanese poetry.
Haiku combines form, content, and language in a meaningful, yet compact form.
The most common form for Haiku is three short lines. The first line contains five (5) syllables, the second line seven (7) syllables, and the third line contains five (5) syllables.
Haiku doesn't rhyme. A Haiku must "paint" a mental image in the reader's mind.
This is the challenge of Haiku - to put the poem's meaning and imagery in the reader's mind in only 17 syllables over just three (3) lines of poetry.
Congratulations to Michael for this Academic Achievement as well as achieveing the Yearly Honor Rollfor Third Grade as well as the first two quarters of his 4th Grade Academic Year.
These accomplishments reflect his hard work and Christian Values.
