Our house à la Cat in the hat

Looking desperately at the unbelievable disaster all around our house, I couldn't help but think of Dr. Seuss' words: "...this mess is so big and so deep and so tall - we cannot pick it up! There is no way at all!" Only our house was not messed up by the Cat in the hat and couldn't be blamed on Thing One or Thing Two ... No, it was our ever so busy three and a half year old daughter and, yeah, the lack of the clean gene in myself. On my defense, I am perfectly capable of cleaning our house when or rather if I set my mind to it. Most of the time though I prefer to spend time with our beautiful, smart and funny little girl ... there is always so much fun stuff to do (reading silly books, building Lego castles, painting, tea parties ... you know what I am talking about, right?). I am very positive that I grew up the same way. I don't remember whether our house was sparkling clean (my guess is it was not) but I do cherish memories of my mom's endless patience as she raised her two children to be smart, independent (in my case messy - not so in my brother's - curious, isn't it?) but happy people. And by the way, sometimes the clever messy creations come in handy! The other night, a pile of tissues on our family room table formed - in the eyes of our preschooler - a gorgeous gown for Cinderella, complete with ribbons and sashes (hence the tiny shreds of paper). Every attempt at removing it would cause a bloody murder screaming fit - so it was left right there in my reach as I cried my eyes out while watching Forrest Gump for the 16th time, snuggled up with my hubby later that night in the midst of our house à la cat in the hat.
I know for sure that our daughter's imagination and creativity is more important than every single all-purpose cleaner of the world. And so, when I ask her, many years from now: "Did you have any fun?" my baby girl will nod her head and smile, overlooking a big mess in her own house ...
