School bells have been ringing for a few weeks now. Occassionally the students have a day off and parents are left thinking how do I keep these kids from watching t.v., and playing video games all day? The answer is simple. You can turn to the St Lucie Parks and recreation department.
There is a program hosted at the beautiful new Civic Center called "After the Bell". It runs on days the kids are off for teacher work days.Youth ages 6-15 are invited to attend. The fee is 14.35 per child, very economical indeed to a full days fun, 7:30 to 5:30.
Each session will have theme. This past Monday, the theme was 'a birthday bash." The children enjoyed decorating cupcakes and built their own soft serve ice cream treats in the afternnon.
The day was full of activities including ball playing, races, games and crafts. The huge gymnasium echoed with children's laughter and lots of new friendships were made.
Christine Smith, recreational leader, was thrilled with the attendance. She told me the program has been in existence for a year now. It appears to be a huge hit.
I had previously been to events at the Civic Center, but never in it. What a beautiful building this is. We are very fortunate to have this center for events and recreation. Keep up the great work Parks and Recreation!
Copies of the Leisure Time magazine are available at the Civic center. It describes all of the events, programs and park information. The city also has a website
