A Bit of Arlington Cemetery in Stuart Fl
Contributed by: Susan F. Scherer on 6/12/2009

Last year a sea of crosses seemed to sprout up over night in the Veterans Park along Ocean Blvd in Stuart. Treasure Coast residents slowed and ogled at the site that bloomed up for the Memorial Day weekend. The curious stopped and wondered through the field of markers representing the dead servicemen that gave their lives to defend our countries freedoms from as far back as the Civil War, from the Treasure Coast and surrounding communities. This year the sea of markers reappeared in the same way with crosses and star makers planted and hung with dog tags of the fallen heros that are often over looked in our busy world.

The field of Remembrance is a loving gesture that is put together by the young men from Victory Forge Military Academy. The young men from this private school, the staff from Victory, members of the community and Col Roberts from the Road to Victory Museum, worked to bring this small plot of dirt to life in a way to, 'Never Forget" those that served and are serving for us today,

As part of their curriculum, the cadets from Victory are able to choose a community service project to work on during the school term. Many of them chose this project as a way to commemorate this often overlooked holiday
After completing the project the cadets then write a report on their experience with the project and what they have learned from being involved in it.

Many may wonder why this would need to be made part of the learning process. Or why some may wonder why waste the space. I think that the need for this remembrance can be summed up by a story Col.Weierman the man in charge of Victory Forge related to me of a young lady that he observed sitting alongside a cross marker this year. The young lady was there 'talking' to her husband that had been lost in battle. When the Col spoke to the young lady, she expressed how thankful that she was to have the remembrance in the area so that she could feel a little closer to her husband through it. After hearing that story, and after attending most of celebration last year, I can attest to the closure that the event brings to the community and the honor that was brought to those that have served and continue to serve.

Projects like that one is just one of the projects that the Col gets his young cadets involved in to help form them into responsible, mature young men that can step away from Victory Forge in a more solid footing then they walk in with.
Serving the area as a place for youths to rebuild their lives in a self satisfying and socially acceptable pattern through counseling, therapy, education, moral development, work experience, recreational activities, behavioral modification and management and environment therapy.
