WQCS To Mark Memorial Day
With Three Specials
Public radio station WQCS / 88.9 FM will recognize Memorial Day with its annual presentation of
Young Musicians Spotlight and with a two-hour special on World War II survivors.
The station kicks off the afternoon of programming at Noon with its locally-produced
Young Musicians Spotlight. Area students studying classical music will perform on the one-hour special. They were selected from three days of auditions in April.
Host Willi Miller will present the musical talents of the students, who will perform various classical music selections on piano, flute, violin, vocals and more. This is the 10th year the station has hosted the program.
At 1 p.m., listeners can enjoy an encore performance of NPR's
From the Top with classical pianist host Christopher O'Riley. The program is a repeat of the show recorded in March at the Historic Sunrise Theatre in downtown Fort Pierce.
Seven students from around the country, including students from Jupiter and Miami, will perform classical music on piano, guitar, viola, and cello. O'Riley will accompany the students in their performances and will also interview them about their interests.
During the program, the Sunrise Theatre, Fort Pierce, the Indian River Community College Foundation, the St. Lucie County Cultural Affairs Council, Hutchinson Island and WQCS will be mentioned by the program host and announcer.
At 3 p.m., WQCS will present
The World War I Living History Project. The program will consist of interviews with 12 remaining veterans from that war. They range in age from 105 to 115 years old. President Woodrow Wilson described these people as the ones who made the world "safe for democracy."
Retired CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite will narrate and host the program.
