The St. Lucie County Cultural Affairs Council (CAC) plays a vital role in the promotion of numerous organizations. This year, through grants and awards, over $50,000 will be given to support various causes.
The Council's Chairman, Jack Connolly, states that the goal is to expand awareness of the CAC and to continue informing the public of the cultural diversities within the community.
Many special events held by ethnic groups are sponsored. Diverse art in the form of paintings, sculptures, and music are also placed on display for the community to enjoy. In addition, several educational societies and charitable projects receive the Council's backing.
The celebration of acclaimed local author, Zora Neale Hurston, is of particular focus for the Council. Through the Zora Fest, held in Fort Pierce, the public has had access to book reviews, festivals, award ceremonies, and theater productions. The Harlem Renaissance, held in March, commemorated the literature of this esteemed writer.
