Master Gardener's Festival Keeps Us Growing
Contributed by: Dotty Greene on 5/27/2008

It was a delightful April Saturday full of opportunities! That's because the Master Gardener's annual Spring Into Gardening Festival, always provides creative ways to communicate the joy of learning about gardens. This year, think five senses...

Smell:

The welcome greeting for visitors to the Spring Festival was luckily aroma-less! Manure was available for purchase through the St. Lucie County 4H GROUP. Full of nutrients for plants, it ought to be first on the gardener's shopping list. Thus this shopping area belonged at the entry.

Taste:

Tropical Fruit tasting is always a hit. Luscious varieties of fruits which can be grown in local gardens were a cool refreshment. The workshop was offered by Master Gardeners in cooperation with th Rare Fruit Club.

Hearing:

Listening up, visitors were able to learn about the important features of various plants during the Plant Fashion Show. Coordinated by Judy Coffman, costumed Master Gardeners and friends strolled the runway carrying plants related to their creative outfits. Whether the costume emphasized growth habit or appearance of the plant, the informative and amusing experience will remain in visitors memory for sure!

Sight:

What gorgeous plants and wonderful information booths! Great to see rare plants, specialty varieties of Orchids, Bromeliads, Crotons, Roses and on and on! Vendors were terrific. Definitely a wealth of plants and garden information!

Touch:

The new Demonstration Garden had about 200 visitors! While we tend to use our vision for overview, it was great to touch the plants and decide which full sun or shade tolerant species would be welcome in our own yards. Then off to the Master Gardeners plant nursery. Wow - lots of plants to touch and actually purchase to take home.

The final "touch": remember that the proceeds of the day will be used to supplement Master Gardener projects that teach the community. Thanks to raffle donors Kasey Libuha, Blooming Idiots' Roses, and Heathcote Gardens, the raffle was a big success. By funding scholarships, workshops, or other learning experiences, the Spring into Gardening Festival turned out to be an opportunity for everyone to grow!

Many thanks to each Master Gardener and every vendor who helped to make this day
a great day for growing! It was pretty clear that all who participated had a great garden-loving time!

It was my pleasure to be able to help our community gardeners select plants to enhance their home gardens. Great job on getting the day's feeling in the printed word.
