“Going Green” New Buzzword, Old Idea
Contributed by: Pat Kahrimanian on 1/7/2009

Save the planet! Lots of us have been working really hard to help do that in many ways. Attached is a photo of one of my rain barrels (I have five on my property). This one is hooked up to my front yard fountain. It takes a lot of water to keep the fountain going because of condensation, so my fountain only runs after a rain when the basin in full of rain water. Granted, I could have positioned the barrel better so that I would not have a "Rube Goldberg" set up, but it does the job.

Another photo is the back of my car, a hybrid, which gets 50 miles to a gallon, that is loaded with paper for recycling at my church, All Saints, Jensen Beach. Newspapers are collected from neighbors and all paper from my home: computer paper after using both sides, paper towels from the kitchen and every scrap of paper that can be recycled goes into the back of the car. Cardboard is placed in the local recycle bins for pick up. Almost forgot that the newspapers are also killing grass in my yard under 4 truck loads of much that was saved from going to a landfill.

The plastic bags contain shredded matter from my home and my neighbor's and it is removed from the bags before depositing into the recycle bin at church. The plastic bags are reused in my home and then recycled at the supermarket.

Recently, the Martin County Master Gardeners have started a project where everyone attending a "pot luck dinner" brings his own plate, cup and silverware, so that we no longer have to use the Styrofoam variety that lasts forever.

Cans are saved for a neighbor who also takes them to her church. The cans are sold and the money is given to young, needy children as spending money. To some of these children, this is the only money they have ever had of their own.

I know I can do more and you can help to the best of your abilities. Let's all try!
