Hebson On Functional Fitness at TNT
Contributed by: Bill Hebson on 10/6/2009

On Saturday, October 17th as part of the TNT Family Fitness Members Appreciation Day, which promises to be an incredible event, I have the pleasure of presenting a FREE clinic on "Functional Training"
"Functional training" is one of those fitness buzz words we hear thrown around in the gym's pretty frequently today. While functional training opens up a whole new world for trainers and a myriad of possibilities for fitness enthusiasts it is still largely misunderstood and it's application haphazard. A new article comes out and suddenly everyone is at the gym juggling cantalopes on their Bosu Balls doing "functional training".
The real goal of strength training, the real functional goal of strength training is to be able to better balance and control our own body weight. We must successfully navigate the three dimensional world we live in. This implies what. First it demands we train standing. We are rarely asked to apply force sitting down or laying down. Real life and certainly athletics is standing. Real life is also dynamic, we have level changes, rotation, stretch loading, and we are constantly either reducing or producing momentum. Power development is a critical and essential element of functional training. Everything we do in the real world and athletically is power dominant. Power is the ability to apply force or strength rapidly or explosively. When we pick up the groceries or stand up from a chair, or hit a golf ball, none of this happens slowly. We are using momentum to overcome inertia. So the tools of choice for functional training are dumbbells, medicine balls, bands, bodyweight, kettlebells, and free weights. We are employing plyometrics, agility, balance, reaction and more So functional training can be described as complex training or multi-dimensional training. The trick is to understand these modalities and integrate them into the wealth of traditional exercise that we know to be tried and true.
For all you personal trainers out there watch for my next Functional Training Certification coming December 5th. For more information call Bill at 772-323-9338.
