Summer Break...not Humerus!
Contributed by: Sheri Hilliard on 7/23/2009

Schools out for the Summer. Anyone thinking of the line "What I did on my Summer vacation" to prepare students for the new school year? If you have kids or grandkids, your worst fear is winding up in the Emergency Room on a weekend. Accidents are omnipresent if you have kids. I can tell you first hand, your fears can be laid to rest.
My 8 year old had a scuffle with his 7 year old brother that landed him in the Emergency Department of St Lucie Medical Center two weeks ago,on a Sunday. He was in the door and out in less than 2 hours. The swollen wrist lead to x-rays and a splint and sling. Physicians assistant David Hendry, and Rebecca Smith, R.N., quickly expidited the diagnostics and treatment plan to get Noah home in time for lunch! We were referred to an Orthopaedic specialist, Dr. Hruska.
My pediatrician, Pediatric Associates in St Lucie West, quickly coordinated our visit to see Dr Hruska.
The technology is incredible today. We stopped by the hospital Monday night on our way to a Cub scout meeting and were greeted by Dr Mike Meloni, the ER Director, in the hall. He asked how Noah was healing and directed us to the radiology department down the hall. No longer are there bulky films to carry. The radiology tech gave us a CD disc of the films in seconds flat. Such caring service.
We arrived at Coastal Orthopaedics on Tuesday and were greeted by a very efficient staff.
Dr. Hruska readily examined the films and decided that a cast was the treatment, we were relieved that no surgery was required!
The doctors assistant Ann Rutyna,M.A., was prepared to put a cast on Noah, he was immensely disappointed that he would not be able to swim in the pool or go to the beach. He couldn't understand the temporal effect of a cast. I apologized to Ann that I hadn't mentioned that Noah had Asperger's. She quickly switched gears, she had experience with Autistic children. She helped Noah through the fear and alleviated all his concerns. They picked together a colored cast. Noah said it is "Green, like God's green grass'.
We followed up in a week and Noah couldn't wait to see Ms. Ann, he really liked her cause she "smells like Bubble gum". Mommy really likes her because she took that extra effort to make a parent feel like they had their child well taken care of. Dr Hruska said," you need 3 more weeks in the cast". Noah chimed, "that's 21 days!" He loves mathematics!
CoastalOrthopaedics also offers an open MRI and a physical therapy department on site.
I hope everyone in this community can appreciate all the hard workers that care for us. And Ann, you made a huge difference in one little boys life! Thank You!
How many more days till school starts? Ask Noah. He's already got a story lined up!
