AUTISM AFFECTS MORE OF US THEN WE REALIZE
Contributed by: Susan F. Scherer on 7/24/2009

Did you know that 1 in every 94 boys born today is diagnosed with autism.
That means that every 20 min there is another diagnosis of autism in the world.
That is i in every 150,000 people today, compared to ten years ago when the diagnosis was 1 in every 10,000, and yet no one knows why this dramatic increase has occurred.

Depending on who you talk to about this highly emotional topic, there are many things to blame.

Everyone knows about the actress that blames vaccines for autism.
There are also theories that plastics and/or microwaves may be part of the causes also. Without good honest research though the final jury is still out on the causes of this disorder that is isolating our children.

Okay lets stop for a moment.
Do you know what autism is?

Stop that. I am not making fun of any one.

Autism is a disorder, that at least on the Treasure Coast of Florida, many of us did not hear about until the incident in one of the local schools where a child was voted out of class.

After that autism, asperger's and the other diseases that fit that spectrum were all some of us talked about.

"Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person's lifetime. It is part of a group of disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders. (ASD)"

WHAT!?!?

Yeah, I know, that is lots of words to describe the person that used to sit next to you in school, that you thought was just weird.

Okay a layman definition; impairs a person's ability to communicate and relate to others.

There are more and more families dealing with this disorder as it perpetrates our world. Some may feel that the child is out of control or may get them to a point where they are 'over diagnosed' into a more sever mental retardation.

So where can parents go for help?

It will take a long time for the full mysteries of autism to be discovered, but with help there is a way. If you are interested in helping fund the research check out surfersforautism on facebook, who is helping fund research in this field.
