A group of healthcare professionals at St Lucie Medical Center recently met to discuss action plans in the community regarding the H1N1 virus. The forum was organized by Sarsi Lawhorn,RN, a patient care coordinator in the Emergency room at SLMC.
The media has been saturated with stories regarding the virus and has caused some fear in some folks. Fear, can bestbe descibed as 'false evidence appearing real". The best defense is to arm yourself with facts to protect yourself and your family.
Lawhorn, saw the need to have a question and answer session, as well as an information forum to empower her staff members at the facility.
Conducting the class was Maureen Dohoney,a certified nurse specialist in epidemiology, from the health department. Visuals were used ,from the CDC, to show the impact of the H1N1 virus on the nation and the community. Points that were stressed, getting vaccinated, handwashing and hygiene practices.
Staff who were present included Nancy Hilton,CNO, Debra Davis, employee health nurse and Suzanne Perry, RN,infection control nurse.
Also in attendance was Dr Eric Young, who has his practice next to the hospital.
The meeting left attendees with a feeling of confidence in the heathcare system that adequate vaccine and remedies to alleviate flu symptoms would be available to all in the community should the need arise.
More information is available on the CDC website, the St Lucie Health Dept website, and St Lucie Medical Centers website. Also of interest is an article in this months Treaure Coast Parentiing magazine, titled "Influenza,is it swine?Or is it just fine", written by Dr Michael Sonnenblum, one of our local Pediatricians. The magazine is available at multiple CVS locations or in the lobby at St Lucie Medical Center.
Flu shots were given during the meeting.
