Am1590 WPSL broadcast live from HarborPlace on "Black Friday" to advertise their "Christmas Kids" program. The residents and staff of HarborPlace at Port St Lucie, a Retirement Resort and Assisted Living Community, generously donated more than one hundred toys and games to Christmas Kids. Santa and Mrs. Claus were at the Live Radio Broadcast at HarborPlace to receive unwrapped gifts and donations for the WPSL Christmas Kids program, which benefits the 1,000+ St Lucie County kids who otherwise wouldn't receive any gifts this Christmas. They then joined in on caroling live on WPSL 1590 AM radio.
WPSL CHRISTMAS KIDS OF ST. LUCIE CO.
The Christmas Kids originated in 1946 when the first radio station on the Treasure Coast broadcast an appeal to help a little girl with brain cancer. The generosity of listeners was overwhelming--the toys and money donated helped little Reba Nell & many more children.
The campaign has continued every holiday season since. In 2006, the Christmas Kids provided toys for more than 1800 children referred by St. Lucie County Community Services and other agencies. Over the years, the Christmas Kids expanded to include St. Lucie County summer recreation programs for children, such as day camp & swimming programs, free use of the Minsky Gym, police-supervised boxing & recreation, plus medical supplies and school clothing for families with no other place to turn.
