Happy Father's Day
Contributed by: Sharon Keaton on 5/31/2006

I would like to nominate my dad Raymond Eshelman for the Father's Day Contest.

Here is my story. I am going on 49 years old and my dad has always been there for me. He and my mother have been married for over 54 years and have always been there for my sister and I. We have all had our ups and down's in life but no matter what my dad has stood by me.

So many things stand out in my mind that I would like to share them with you. In my early years I was a very active child. I can say was involved in a lot of sports. These sports included Jazz, ballet, swimming, and most of all ice skating. All of these sports required support from my family but the one which endured the most time and money was the ice skating. My dad would drive me to and from the ice rink which was over 45 minutes away and would stay until I was finished. He watched and waited all the time, and wanted me to achieve which I felt had to be so boring for him. But he took it upon himself! to become a United States Figure Skating judge just so he could be by my side.

Then he even learned how to skate. If you could have seen oh how so proud of me he was. He would take my hand and skate side by side and would have this smile so large as much as to say look at me that is my baby out there twisting and turning.

When I was sixteen my father did everything in his power to help me achieve my goal as an ice skater. We were an average family, with not a lot of money, but my dad decided to give me an opportunity of a lifetime. Christmas morning in 1976 he presented me with a trip of a lifetime. It was to go to the 1976 World's Figure Skating Championships in Munich, Germany. The trip was for 11 days and is something I will always remember.

In the years growing up I also can remember going crabbing and fishing with my dad, my sister did not like getting dirty but not me after a day of crabbing or fishing we would sit out on the back patio on ! a picnic table and eat the crabs until we could eat no more. !

Then in 1990 I went through a very nasty divorce after 13 years. I had two small children then 6 and 2 years old, no money and nowhere to go and who came to the rescue was my mom and dad. They drove to Texas in there small 2 seater car, I left after 13 years of marriage with what we could fit in my dad's car and mine and drove straight through to Florida and moved in with them for a year no questions asked.

We have never been a family of hugs and kisses but the closeness has always been there. I myself have to this day never said I love you, but I know he knows.

Last year my dad had a stroke and it made me think life is so short and we take everything for granted, thank god he totally recovered but I wanted him to here the words from me. Dad you have always been so strong and a major part of my life and you have made me what I am today and for that I want to say Thank you from the bottom of my heart, to you and mom for raising me of course and Susan, but not just us your grandchildren J'son, Polk and Christopher. We love you very much.

So this is my story, hope you enjoyed reading it because I sure loved living it. Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there.
