Students use Tropical Storm Fay's winds for good
Contributed by: Tod Mowery on 8/22/2008

This past week Gabriella and Taggert Mowery teamed up with close neighbor Matthew Gustin to harness the winds from Tropical Storm Fay. Through some creative ingenuity, including a bed sheet, a broom handle and a chunk of duct tape, the Port St. Lucie students were successfully able to set sail down the street in their red wagon. The adventure helped the students make the best of an abnormally windy day, courtesy of Tropical Storm Fay. The Tropical Storm, which the day before dropped over 9" of rain, caused the closure of area schools.

Interestingly, one of Gabriella's first lessons of the new school year was on Christopher Columbus and his own adventure to find a trade route from Europe to the Indies. Little did she know that this week's history lesson would become a spring board for some creative neighborhood adventures.

So, while other Port St. Lucie homeowners were busy sailing down flooded streets in actual boats, these neighborhood buddies reenacted a historic adventure, sailing down the street, much to the applause of area neighbors.
