Physicians Immediate Care, the premier provider of urgent care medicine on the TreasureCoast, reminds residents to use caution when dealing with electricity during or after a major storm, such as Tropical Storm Fay.
"Electrocution is a primary concern whenever there's a major storm," said Kenneth J. Palestrant, M.D., founder of Physicians Immediate Care. "Water and electricity just don't mix," he added. Dr. Palestrant warns residents to avoid standing water because downed power lines may be hidden beneath the surface. When using electrical equipment, don't allow a power cord to get wet, and don't stand in water while operating this type of equipment. If water intrusion has occurred in your home, unplug electrical appliances and turn off the circuit breaker, if necessary. Lastly, when re-setting the circuit breaker or plugging in electrical cords, do so on a dry or insulated surface, suggests Dr. Palestrant.
Physicians Immediate Care wants to remind residents that they are available on an urgent basis if you have health questions or concerns, or if you have been accidently injured during cleanup.
