Remembering the D-Day Veterans
Contributed by: Captain Charlie Conner on 6/5/2008

64 years ago on June 6, 1944, D-Day was taking place in Europe.Thousands of young Americans landed that day and many sacrificed their lives to help change the world and secure freedom for all of us. June has always had a place in my heart as my dad was in the first waves of the troops that landed that day. He passed on last year, but his memory and bravery to our country will always live on in our hearts.

As part of the 29th Division in the 116th Infantry of Company B, Pvt. Charles Conner was among the many thousands that were to land on the beaches of France that morning. In the early hours, his craft was in the first wave to hit Omaha Beach. As the ramp was dropped, all but three were killed before they could hit the beach. Fortunately, my dad was one of those three soldiers that survived.

He seldom would speak of his service days, as the memory of his buddies and friends that died beside him was too muchfor him tobear. He cried whenever he thought of them. He was always proud to be a part of the D-Day Campaign, but was always a quiet man and never put himself ahead of the friends that died for this country. Fifty years later he could finally talk some about what he had endured that day, but always had those tears for his buddies.

There only a few left alive who served with him now. The local newspaper in Charleston, WV had just done a front page story about him last year, just a few weeks before his passing. He was so very proud of that article and it made me proud to be one of his children. When he went to see "Saving Private Ryan", he said that is was the closest thing he had seen to what happened that day, but it was much worse than anyone could ever try and imagine.

Let's all take a moment this friday on June 6th and remember those who sacrificed their lives for our country and helped secure our freedom.

Thanks Dad!
