June 6, 1944 changed World War II and changed our world. How many remember the fallen heros and the veterans of D-Day? I hope we never forget what those soldiers sacrificed for our freedom.
My dad was in the first wave on D-Day. He was in the 116th Infantry, Company B and landed on what is now known as Bloody Omaha. His unit was to secure Vierville Draw. When they landed on the beach, only three men in my dad's landing craft survived the initial landing. Luckily, for me, he was one of them. None of us can ever know how these soldiers survived and fought as their buddies died next to them on the beach. I will, forever, be thankful for everyone who fought in D-Day and helped preserve our freedom.
My dad passed away two years ago, but his memory in D-Day will live on forever. There are so very few survivors left. More and more pass on each day and it is up to us to carry on the memories of those that fought in World War II. He wouldn't talk about his experience for fifty years. He still cried for his buddies each time he thought of that day. He told us that he never feared dying and always knew in his heart that he would live through that day.
Remember the Heros of D-Day!
