Love is in the Air!

Love is in the Air
Food is Art...at least it should be!
By Dana Coates of Eventmakers International

Planning the menu for your wedding reception and how it will be presented, is often the element of the party that gives the happy couple the most enjoyment. Choosing food can be just as creative and fun as planning the décor or entertainment. Keep this thought in mind while working on your menu. Remember that your guests will "feast" with their eyes as well as their mouths.

Question: Should I use a caterer or have friends cook for my wedding reception?
Answer: Unless your friend is a professional, I strongly suggest using a caterer. A caterer will sit down and personalize a menu that reflects your personality and extends the theme of your wedding concept.

What I love: A caterer that strives to present food in new, innovative ways, both in the food and the presentation. Some will be creative enough to serve salad in a martini glass, and gazpacho soup in a tall shot glass. The unexpected is always refreshing and creates a buzz among the guests.

Question: Should I have a buffet or a sit down dinner?
Answer: It is always nice to have the food served to your guests, however, if budget is a concern, it is always more economical to have a buffet. If you decide on a buffet your caterer will work with you to make your buffet a visual extension of your colors and reception décor. Also, talk to them about using unique serving dishes. You don't want the buffet to end up being a line of chafing dishes. Maybe you have some family heirloom pieces to incorporate - they should be happy to accommodate you. If it is a plated dinner, have the salad and bread on the table when guests arrive - it eliminates the possibility of a lot of hungry guests waiting for food.

What I love: I think food stations are a great compromise. Most guests like visiting food stations. It gives them the opportunity to choose the food they want and see it prepared before their eyes. You can have anything from carving stations to pasta stations. Maybe the finale can be a chocolate fountain surrounded by fruit where guests can drizzle the chocolate on their fruits of choice .

Question: Can I serve 'heavy' hors d'oeurves ONLY at my wedding reception.
Answer: NO! Guests expect to have an actual meal. Heavy hors d'oeurves are only appropriate at a cocktail party where guests only expect appetizers.

What I love: I think it is a treat to have hot passed hors d'oeurves at your reception, but there should also be a table set up with munchies such as cheese, vegetables, olives and other items that guests can enjoy at their leisure.
