SO MANY CHARITIES SO LITTLE MONEY
Contributed by: Susan F. Scherer on 6/3/2008

Its the age old question that parents not only get from their kids.
" CAN I HAVE SOME MONEY'

Now granted the charity doesn't give you the puppy dog eyes that all our children have perfected. But they can be as persuading. How do you know who is the better charity? How do you know if your money actually goes to the folks you want to help?

In doing some research on some local charities I found some interesting facts out.

Roadrunner Charity Inc,( http://www.roadrunnercharity.com/home), a local motor cycle group that rallies around local charities to give their support and to help other groups in their charitable activities. Vicky Huggins, Huggs who is one of the founding members and I talked about how she and her group are working with Safespace, the Treasure Coast Food Bank and Hope Center for Autism as their main groups.

The Treasure Coast Food Bank, (http://www.treasurecoastfoodbank.org/pages/food_assistance.html,) where most of local food panties on the Treasure Coast are restocked. The Food Bank supports St Lucie, Indian River, Martin and Okeechobee counties.

Love Doctor's Charities,( http://www.lovedoctors.org/)use no paid staff. So all you money goes to the charity. This charity provides support, financial or otherwise to select groups or individuals.

These are just three of our local charities. And if you look there are many more, even some on your own street.

How do you decide who gets your money.
Mission is one of the main things. Are they doing what you want them to do?
Are the right people getting the help.

I like the Love Doctor's since I know that though they have big events, they are lots of times a tag along to a radio promo that is going on. The Bowling Event in the Lake Worth area, was mainly for the local Real Radio but the charity got to benefit. It is nice to be able to tag along like that if you have a charity.

The Bike Fest 2008,( http://treasurecoastbikefest.com/index.asp ),event scheduled for June 13-14, is sponsored by many local companies to benefit the ARC of Martin County,( http://www.arcmc.org/ )and is put on with help from Toyota of Stuart. is one event that John Pierson, the owner of TOS told me he wanted to mainly inform people about the agency and the things it does. "Awareness" was one thing that John stressed when we were talking. And that is important. If you are not aware, then you can't help.

And helping does not just have to be from your pocketbook.
Money is tight all over. One friend of mine is always involved in events in the area and when I asked how she can do it, my she told me that it was not the money that she gave but the time that she contributed.

If you can not give a dollar give an hour, and if you can not find a charity that you like then help you neighbor. After all this is our own little corner of the world.
