The Treasure Coast Parrot Head Club raised $12,811 for the American Cancer Society and won seven awards for participating in the 2009 Relay for Life event in May at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, including 1 st place for Best Overall Team.

The awards were presented in June during the Relay for Life Appreciation Night at the stadium, which was followed by a St. Lucie Mets baseball game.

This year marked the largest fund-raising in the Treasure Coast Parrot Head Club's history and the club's third year participating in Relay for Life.

The club chose "Peter Pan" as its theme in the event, titled the "St. Lucie Children's Storybook Relay." All teams participating in this event raised a total of more than $104,000 for the American Cancer Society .

The Treasure Coast Parrot Head Club also won 1 st place for Best Team Costume, 1 st place for Best Team Banner, 1 st place for Best Overall Campsite, 2 nd Place for Funniest Campsite, 3 rd Place for Best Decorations and 3rs Place for Best Mission Statement. All awards were judged by cancer survivors and members of other teams participating in the event.

One of the ways the club raised money for the charity was to sell "Parrot-Ice" (a Parrot Head version of snow cones). Children of the club members, who are called "Keets" - an abbreviated of Parakeets - manned the concession stand during the fund-raising event.

The Treasure Coast Parrot Head Club is a chapter of Parrot Heads in Paradise Inc., the national organization of Jimmy Buffett fan clubs. The club meets for Happy Hour the first Wednesday of every month at the Copacabana Grille on Hutchinson Island, Jensen Beach.

The club is a Florida non-profit corporation with 188 members from Melbourne to Jupiter. The club supports a number of local organizations, including the Treasure Coast Food Bank, Salvation Army, Florida Oceanographic Society and Council on Aging "Meals on Wheels" programs.
