John Pierson, owner of Toyota of Stuart, was the presenting sponsor of the recent
premiere event M.E. Team's Celebrity Benefit Ball at the Tesoro Club on Friday, February 1, 2008.
The event was organized by Martin County resident Scott Proctor who is a pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Proctor recruited New York Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon, Yankees pitcher Kyle Farnsworth and Marlins pitcher Andrew Miller for the two day event.
"Scott came to see me about two weeks before the event and talked to me about his daughter's near fatal heart problem when she was only three weeks old. Being a father myself, I could certainly identify with his situation," commented Pierson.
"At Toyota we are very involved with the Little Leagues in our area, and so it was a great fit for us since Scott will be teaming up with the Challenger Little League program and the East Stuart Youth Baseball program," he continued.
The fundraising kicked off with a $500 per plate dinner at the elegant Tesoro Club in Port St. Lucie where guests could bid on signed sports memorabilia, original artwork and dining and entertainment packages. Exclusive items carrying reserve bids included a Jimmy Buffett autographed guitar, a Paul McCarney autographed CD with photos, a Rocky Balboa poster signed by Sylvester Stallone and a Frank Sinatra autographed album.
On Saturday, about 80 guests journeyed to Okeechobee's Quail Creek Plantation and tried their hands at shooting sporting clays. The Pro baseball players soon realized that their baseball skills weren't channeled so easily into shooting skills. By all accounts, it was a fun day for a worthy cause.
"Toyota of Stuart is proud to be associated with this first year event and we hope to see it grow and improve next year as well," Pierson said.
