The Lions of Florida Give Vouchers to 101 Families In
Palm Bay , Florida who Lost Their Homes due To Fire
The Lions motto is "We Serve" the Lions of Palm Bay, Viera, Melbourne and Port St. Lucie really served the community by trying to make sure 101 families who lost their homes were able to go to Walmart on Malibar road with vouchers to purchase food, clothing and medication. The Our Lady of Grace Catholic church provided space for us to be of assistance to the families.
How sad it is when you see a mother with a 5 week old baby in arms looking for help for her family because she lost it all or another couple with mortgage papers in their hand who never had a chance to move into their home because of fire. Many families were without electric for days so the Lions were able to replace their food, seniors lost their medication and we replaced that medication.
Each voucher was worth $50.00 and depending on the size of the family it determined how many vouchers they received. We thank our district D Governor Roger Messer for requesting the emergency grant that we received from Lions International. We thank Lions International for granting the request as well as the financial support from other Lions Clubs and individuals we were able to assist our communities with some recovery.
We do nothing structural but when there is a natural disaster such as Hurricanes, tornados, or fires we can get assistance for our communities as well as the community using the services of the Red Cross and other organizations.
One of the Lions International service commitments is Sight First. Lions conquering blindness. building upon it's long standing tradition of aiding the blind and visually impaired. Other service activities of the Lions Clubs International Include;
Hearing and Speech actions and work with the deaf.
Cultural and environmental service
diabetes programs
International relations and a variety of activities unique to local communities around the world. Lions are established in 200 countries and when you see those Gold and Purple vest our purpose is to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the people of the world. To take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community to encourage service minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward. pride in knowing 100% of the monies raised from the public goes back to the public.
I can't say thank you enough to our Past District Governors, Ed Pick,
Doris Hollins, PCC Mel Boome and Governor Elect Gil Francis , Zone chair Mary Pryer who managed the crowds of families and we were able to help most in an orderly fashion with the help of the other Lions who were there.
To all the Lions who have relocated into Florida. WE NEED YOU. Again Thanks for your support of the Lions
Sincerely,
Carl W. Hollins
Disaster Chair, District D
