PAL Youth Directors Help Save Trees
Contributed by: Tom Filipkowski on 10/25/2009

On Saturday, October 24, 17 volunteers from the Youth Directors Program of the Port St. Lucie Police Athletic League came out to the Fort Pierce Inlet State Park to work with park rangers in protecting the red bay laurel trees. The native trees, important to butterflies and birds, are being threatened by a fungus that could kill them if treatment is not initiated.

Most of the red bay laurel trees are in the woods and not easily accessible. Youth volunteers and their adult supervisors from PAL helped cut back brush and vegetation to get to the trees. They then dug out around the root base of each tree so that more experienced volunteers could inject the trees with the fungicide necessary to save them.

The volunteer opportunity provided a great learning experience for the teen volunteers who participated.
