Art Finds Home in
St. Lucie County Fire District Administration Building
Highwaymen pieces included in group of paintings
St. Lucie County, FL - Regional artists have found another location to exhibit their works in public. The St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD) Administration Building is home to 11 paintings by local artists, including four noted Highwaymen.
The works include landscapes from W. Peyman-Eckert, W. Eckert, Norman Wright, Tracy Newton, John Maynor, Kelvin Hair, and Puddin Race.
The Highwaymen were a group of self-taught African American landscape painters from Fort Pierce, who painted their way out of poverty in the 1950s. They got their name because they sold their artwork along the highway, specifically US 1.
The SLCFD Administration Building is located at 5160 NW Milner Drive, Port St. Lucie. The building is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
