Our servicemen and women are most definitely on our minds at this time of year, but at the Treasure Coast Woodcarvers they are constantly in the fore! For some time, over 30 of the members have been working on bald eagle canes for disabled veterans. Conrad Upright, pictured here with his cane, served during World War II and was a Navy Master Chief, so he has an abiding affinity for others who have served.
The members at Treasure Coast Woodcarvers range from beginners to award-winning, world-class carvers and they generously teach and encourage each other. Upright has been a TCW member for over 10 years and credits club members including Master Carver Bill Joeckel for mentoring him and honing his skills. While he also carves birds, caricatures and golf club heads, his talent is very evident in the cane. He doesn't go anywhere he can't have a knife in his pocket for more "whittling." Over the years he has happily given carvings to his children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors and encourages others to carve. He's said, "If you can carve a potato, you can carve a bird, so come join us!"
TCW will be seeking the names of potential cane recipients at the 25 th Annual Treasure Coast Woodcarver's Show, February 7-8 at Langford Park in Jensen Beach. Attendees can visit the club table to submit a request for a cane for themselves or a veteran.
