Russ Cox's interest in wildlife began in Missouri State Parks as a city kid encountering wildlife in the Ozarks. He first tried to capture them in pencil drawings and then oil, wildlife photography and lately wood carving which is a natural for him as he'd enjoyed building things out of wood for his sons.
Russ's first carving attempt was about 15 years ago. It was a duck head he carved using a knife on a chunk of two by four number 2 pine. He says, "It was kind of like trying to carve a brick." Then seven years ago he found the Treasure Coast Woodcarvers. He'd attended one of their annual shows and subsequently went to one of their weekly Tuesday morning sessions on Harris Street two blocks north of Walton Road, just off Indian River Drive in Port St. Lucie. In 15 minutes he knew he'd fit right in. He was surprised that there were women members. He noted,"Some were burning designs on baskets, plates and wall plaques with very artistic finishes. It's not just a hobby for men."
He adds, "The club has members from Palm Beach to Vero Beach. What really impressed me is that the advanced carvers really enjoyed showing other members how to improve their skills. This is a club dedicated to preserving the wood carving art at any level you want to go for." Members vary from novice to master carvers and their subject matter includes fish, birds, caricatures, woodspirits, love spoons, animals and decorative pieces such as boxes and bowls and more. Russ's talent shows in his birds and his carvings are as beautiful as they are varied.
Russ has become a skilled and valued member of the Treasure Coast Woodcarvers. He's chaired the annual show for several years. This year's show is 10AM-4Pm, Feb 7-8th at Langford Park in Jensen Beach. For more information about the club or the show, you can contact Russ Cox at 772-285-6402 or email him at
