Now every once and awhile you find a local or neighborhood deli that is reminiscent of your childhood memories of good food and good friends. Well Champs pizzeria at 4104 Oleander is just such a place.
You can call ahead for a pizza or subs and sandwiches or pop in and sit a spell while listening to all the neighborhood news from the many regulars that dine and hang out there. Some of the regulars eat there 2 and 3 times a day and always have a tale or two to regale with.
Vinnie is the owner and head cook and there are two things you are guaranteed to get when you come in, a smile and good food. I just recently discovered after years of grabbing lunch's and dinners that Champs also has a few fresh breakfast items to grab on the run. Their biscuits and gravy are what mornings are made for and not puny like some fast food chains.
Each day brings a new special to the menu for the day, a real solid meal with a main item and one or two sides that always complement the entrée. From classic Italian meals to home made chicken and dumplings [Yum Yum] you are always pleased with the daily offering. I often dine on the fish sandwich and fries meal. The fish is so big it has to be cut and folded, or over lapped in the sandwich. It's a real fish sandwich...not square.
I had a meatball parm sandwich the other evening just the way I like it. Just tell the staff how you want your sandwich or meal and they will always go the distance to make you happy. I found out that it's the fresh made [not frozen] homemade meatballs that make it so juicy and delicious.
I think the first and foremost thing is when you dine there you get good portions. When you bite into a sandwich or sub you know what you are eating, there is no guessing what you think is hidden inside. Now of course I am partial to the "Capt Joel" it's a sub with lettuce, tomato, mayo, provolone, and enough Ham Turkey and Roast Beef to please anyone. It is the Heavyweight of the Champs sandwich line up and a true man-wich not for the casual or weak hearted dinner. If you get fries with it, then it often becomes two meals.
So the next time you feel like something different from the same old thing, swing on by or call Champs [464-4215]. Don't be surprised at a full store especially at lunch time, but don't be discouraged, service is as quick as it is good. Heck you'll probably see your friends there and if you don't, before long you'll become part of the gang that enjoys a true neighborhood store and tradition.
Just remember Champs is a family store, a neighborhood favorite, and has old fashion values and prices. You will always feel welcome and a little bit like a kid again. Just a minute ...."Hey Vinnie, can I have some more fries? Mine vanished..go figure!"
