Weekend Warriors Discover Fine Breakfast Dining
Contributed by: Helen Eaton on 12/2/2007

My husband and I are weekend breakfast warriors. While we have a few preferred establishments, we still feel that our neck of the Port St. Lucie woods falls woefully short when it comes to truly pleasurable breakfast experiences.

Sure, there's the IHOP, Bob Evans and Friendly's chains, which offer extensive menu choices and massive portions, but the trade-off to eating in those places is loud, crowded, cramped dining space, and a hurry-up-and-eat-so we-can turn-this-table-over feeling. While those places are fine for the on-the-go family dining experience, sometimes hubby and I are in the mood for a more relaxed, intimate breakfast.

Well, today we found it at Delmonico Grill.

For those unfamiliar with Delmonico's, it is located on the corner of Gatlin Blvd. and Brighton Avenue in Port Saint Lucie. It has been open for a few years now, previously serving dinner only. It has always been one of our favorite dinner spots, and I often wished they were open for breakfast and lunch. I finally got my wish!

I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few tables occupied when we walked in, and even more surprised to hear that it was only their second day serving breakfast. Usually it takes a while for people to realize when a place extends its hours or otherwise makes a change like that.

As always, the ambience was mellow and relaxing. I immediately felt myself smiling on the inside. The staff at Delmonico's is always extremely professional, and (for lack of a better word)......polished. You can tell this place takes great pride in how they present themselves to their clientele. I have always found the servers to be knowledgable, well-spoken, courteous, and a server with no visible tattoos is a very refreshing change. Sorry, its true. They just look a cut above.

Anyway, the breakfast menu was not huge, but it did offer some unusual options like a Monte Cristo sandwich and a BLT, along with the the more familiar fare of omelets, biscuits and gravy, and French toast. I ordered a breakfast burrito and my husband ordered a country fried steak with gravy. We both enjoyed our meals immensely, and the portion sizes were perfect. No mounds of grub spilling over the plate, enticing you to eat half your body weight. Maybe some people feel like they're getting their money's worth that way, but I prefer quality over quantity, and food you can't finish is wasteful. And face it, most of the time, people do not take home their unfinished breakfasts.

While we enjoyed our breakfast, we relaxed to some very nice music that sounded kind of jazzy, new-age-ish. Not sure what it was, but it really enhanced our dining experience. No clanging dishes, no deafening chatter of a thousand people, no screaming kids.......only calm, smiling staff and equally calm, smiling customers. In fact, a large group who had been sitting in the next booth were preparing to leave, and I heard one of them say, "Looks like we've found a great new breakfast place."

I couldn't agree more.
