If you care about your pets, DON'T TAKE THEM HERE!
Contributed by: Sarah Lewis on 5/8/2007

We were adopted by a stray kitten last November who became pregnant on her first heat. We have cared for her, loved her, and been loved back fully since the day we all met. By all, I mean my husband, twelve year old son, ten year old daughter, and myself. My daughter, in particular, has become a surrogate mother and best friend to this cat we call Baby.
Baby went into labor two days ago to no avail. After much internet research and observation it was obvious that Baby was in serious trouble. I had feared that she may be too young to have the kittens and survive herself but this afternoon it became a reality. My husband took Baby and my daughter to Animal Emergency and Referral Service on Midway Road in Fort Pierce where my daughter was told, "The kitten is stuck and if you don't pay seventeen hundred dollars Baby will die." My daughter immediately became hysterical.
If I had that kind of money in my wallet, hey, no problem; but how many of us have that kind of expendable cash? Not many and not me so my husband asked if we could save the cat first and then work out a partial payment plan with a significant down payment. The answer was a definite NO.They said that without all the money up front they wouldn't do a thing to save our pet. I don't know how a Veteranarian who is supposed to care about and take care of animals could ever sleep at night knowing they condemned an animal to death unnecessarily over the almighty dollar. I understand running a business, but where is the humanity?
The only help this Vet gave us was telling us somewhere else to take our Baby. We did take her somewhere else where they are taking care of her; for half payment now and the rest before we can take her home. That ,at least ,is human and achievable. Why should Baby have to die because it may take a few days to come up with the money? She shouldn't, but I can assure you if you take your pets to Animal Emergency and Referral Service they just might. Baby goes into surgery tomorrow morning. Lets hope that looking for human help didn't cost her her life.

Please note that the address of this questionable animal hospital is just North of Midway Road on US 1. Thank you for your support!

I took my Dog to this same Animal Hospital and they charged me 1300.00 to run test, x-rays and keep her for 2 nights, They told me I had to pay $900.00 right then to leave her. I had to give them a credit card or cash. When I picked her up on Monday morning they didn’t know why she was sick, when I took her to my regular Vet, We discovered that she ate a rat, by her throwing up the rat’s tail. I am not sure why this didn’t show up in the e-rays that cost over $500.00. I wish that I knew of another place to take my dog at that time. Our animals are like children to some of us and they know that we will do anything to keep them healthy and Happy. But there is a difference to making money and ripping people off in a time of need. This hospital is over priced with the worst bedside manner. Like I said, If I knew of another Animal Hospital around, I would have been there also and saved a few hundred dollars.
