What a tragedy thatsix children have recently been hit by motorists in the last two years, while on their way to school in Port St Lucie. This is not the fault of daylight savings time. There are many things this city could be doing to avoid such tragedies. First and foremost, our antiquated bussing system has necessitated children getting up at unreasonable hours and walking to the bus in the dark. What happened to school hours from 9-3? That worked just fine when I was growing up. I never had to get up at obscene hours and walk to the bus in the dark. Port St Lucie is still stuck in the sixties ,with a Selma, Alabama, and integration, mentality. The kids have to get up so early, because theymay be on the bus from as much asan hour to an hour and a half, in order to get to their destination at the other end of the county. Secondly, why are there so few sidewalks and shoulders to walk on? The City goes from one extreme to the other. Lennard Road is worthy of Palm Beach, with it's lavish landscaping and paver crosswalks. Just shows what the City can do when it has too many tax dollars to play with. Now they want to extend this road to nowhere, despite the objections of the population. The West Virginia or Crosstown Expressway, is another road to nowhere and a further waste of our tax dollars that could be spent on sidewalks. Look at the money that has been spent, and yet we don't even have approval to go over the river. Shouldn't that have come first? Finally, children much be taught to walk facing the traffic! I don't know who will teach them this, because adults don't seem to be aware of this no brainer. However, remember when riding a bike you go with the traffic. It makes the impact less severe in the event of an accident. Ok, Port St Lucie, I don't want to hear that you don't know what to do to remedy the situation.
