Post your vacation stories and photos

This week my children - along with scores of other Treasure Coast students - will return to school. Although the days of class schedules, homework and science fair projects are back, I know they will have memories of their summer vacation to last a lifetime.

This summer, my husband and I took them on a road trip - 3,200 miles of road, to be exact.

We drove to my home state of New York to attend my high school reunion, to Pennsylvania to visit my 93-year-old grandfather and around to Ohio to visit family.

What a trip!

When I was in elementary school, we were asked to write about what we did on summer vacation. How about you? What did you do?

When I was a child, my father would drive us from New York to Pennsylvania to visit family. My brother and I - in a time before the GameBoy or portable DVD players - were bored to tears. I wasn't expecting my 10- and 12-year old children to enjoy the sights of America as they did.

They marveled over Pilot Mountain in North Carolina.

They were amazed at the cascading water and the cool mist they saw and heard at Niagara Falls.

They took photos of tree-lined interstates through Pennsylvania and Ohio.

And they learned that the American Indians lived throughout this great country of ours - even in Chillicothe, Ohio.

So, our trip was more than visiting home towns, seeing old friends or taking a break from our hectic lives - my young children seemed to learn so much more from this trip.

My husband and I learned that we didn't need to worry about having enough batteries or DVDs to get through it.
