Sebastian Soccer Association is developing the North County Soccer Fields, located off SR512 behind the North County Swimming Pools. Over 300 trees are being planted around the 6 regulation size fields to provide shade and soil stabilization. The trees are available for adoption on a first come basis. For the adoption fee of $100.00, the adopting individual will receive an adoption certificate, and a plaque will be placed near the tree.
The first formal Arbor Day holiday in the United States was held in 1872 in Nebraska. Julius Sterling Morton moved into the Nebraska Territory in 1854. Nebraska at that time was a treeless plain. Mr. Morton missed the trees he knew from Michigan and worked to not only plant trees and shrubs on his property, but to spread information about the need for trees for shade, windbreaks, fuel and building materials in the Nebraska Territory.
An early proponent for environmental stewardship, Mr. Morton encouraged everyone to set aside one day for planting trees. In 1872 the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture accepted Mr. Morton's resolution "to set aside one day to plant trees, both forest and fruit." On that first Arbor Day celebration, more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska.
April 22, J. Sterling Morton's birthday, was chosen as Arbor Day for many years in the United States. National Arbor Day is currently celebrated on the last Friday of April. The Sebastian Soccer Association will be celebrating Arbor Day with a tree adoption program this year. An adoption and Arbor Day program will be celebrated on Saturday April 26, 2008 at the North County Soccer Fields.
The celebration on April 26 th will begin at 1PM with an honorary Color Guard. Elected officials from Indian River County, the City of Sebastian and the City of Fellsmere will be present. Light refreshment will be served after the ceremony. For more information and an adoption forms go to
