Cuts for Cancer to help Save the Ta-tas!
Contributed by: Amber Miller on 2/3/2008

LOCAL WOMAN'S EFFORTS BENEFIT THE BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION

WHO: Amber Miller, SPT with Florida Gulf Coast University

WHAT: "Cuts for Cancer" haircutting event

WHEN: Saturday, February 23, 2008 1pm-4pm

WHERE: Earl's Hideaway, Sebastian

Event Details:

Master's student, Amber Miller is spearheading a local fundraiser to help raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research. When Miller's own family was touched by the disease in the early 1990s, she knew that someday she would try to make a difference. "Looking back on my mom's experience with breast cancer (e.g. losing her hair and getting sick), I want to do all I can to help others find a cure for such a devastating disease."

She chose the organization, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BRCF), because of their mission statement and the fact other groups use them as their platform. Popular clothing line, "Save the Ta-Tas" sends profits to the BCRF, and Miller was able to have the group donate numerous t-shirts, bumper stickers, and other accessories to give away at her event.

The event will be a haircutting event to take place February 23, 2008. Participants can basically "shave or pay." All who donate will be put into a raffle for giveaways and any women who shave their heads will receive a free goodie bag from "Save the Ta-Tas."

Don't think any woman would do it? Miller states she will be the first in line to don the Brittney Spears-like haircut.

"I always wanted to shave my head and 'start over' when having a bad hair day. Women with breast cancer really don't have much of a choice. Many lose their hair during treatment. So, I figured why does my hair have to be who I am? I want to make a statement that my hair does not make me...I make me!"

All are invited to the event which should prove to be a fun and exciting way to help raise money for breast cancer awareness and research.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is an independent 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to "achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and genetic research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health. "

One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, 2,030 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will have died in 2007.

Monetary donations to BCRFare tax deductible.
