Congratulations to the Sebastian Property Owners' Association's fantastic team for Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society's premier annual fundraising event, which was held April 25-26 at Sebastian River High School. Relay is the culmination of many months of fundraising by all the teams in the area. Ours was a new team this year, begun in January 08, and in just three months we brought in donations totaling just over three thousand dollars! We feel proud to have accomplished three times our original one-thousand dollar fundraising goal for the American Cancer Society.
Contributing to local charity is one of the main objectives of the Sebastian Property Owners' Association. And as we understand it, the money raised by the local teams remains here for the American Cancer Society to provide many kinds of assistance to local cancer patients and their caregivers.
Readers, if you haven't been to Relay, think about signing up for a team, or even coming on down to see what it's all about. Relay is a kind of giant party-and-pep-rally, with tents and food, costumes, contests, prizes, fun, and silliness, great comraderie, and just so you don't forget what it's all for, members of the teams take turns walking the track from six in the evening until nine the next morning, to symbolize the journey taken by those diagnosed with cancer, from diagnosis to survival or to a sadder conclusion.
Relay is not for the faint of heart or foot, and "pulling an all-nighter" is both fun and exhausting. An enormous amount of credit must be given to the SPOA team, hardy Senior Citizens all, who, for the most part, hung in there and made it to the next morning. Bless you all.
