Six Liberty Magnet fifth graders have banded together to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Keyani Brown, Emma Nofsker, Jenna Nofsker, Nikki Smith, Makenzi Swanson, and Haley Vance decided that they wanted to raise money for Liberty's Relay for Life team so they wrote a proposal and gave it to their principal, Mr. Dale Klaus. In their typed proposal, they outlined four activities that they wanted to do in order to raise the money. These included the selling of "really cool sunglasses," a bake sale, themed-basket drawings, and a bucket drop. After being given the okay by Mr. Klaus, the group began their effort to raise money. The sunglasses have proven to be great items to sell. They sold out the initial order and are already selling their second "batch." Students will be able to wear these glasses to school during Liberty's "Surfin' for the Cure" dress-up day on April 24th. The other activities will take place at the school's PTA meeting on April 22nd. When asked why they decided to spend their time and energy doing this, they replied, "We want to make a difference and we want to help find a cure for cancer." The girls plan to participate in the actual North Indian River County Relay for Life held at Sebastian River High School on April 24th and 25th.
The relay festivities kick off Friday the 24th at 5 p.m. with the SRHS Steel Drum Band. Opening ceremonies are at 6 p.m., Liberty Magnet's Chorus performs at 8 p.m. and the Luminaria Ceremony is at 8:30 p.m. There will be various games and contests throughout the night. Events begin on Saturday the 25th at 6 a.m. There will be live steel drums, the blood bank, an Indian River County Fire Truck, Sheriff's Helicopter and K-9 Unit on site & much more. The closing ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. Please join us in Surfin' For A Cure as we Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back. For more information on the North Indian River County Relay for Life, visit
