Safe Boating Poster Contest Winners
Contributed by: Robert Scully on 5/6/2008

"Extended Day Program - Poster Contest."

The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) is teaching boating safety to some local kids as part of the " Extended Day Program" and at the same time encouraging them to participate in the poster contest. This is the 11th year that the United States Power Squadron has organized it. The theme for this year is

BOAT SAFELY- KEEP OUR WATERS CLEAN.......

There are rules, prizes, and deadlines for entry. There are three age groups separated by ages. They are 6-8 years old, 9-12 years old and 12-14 years old. This contest is first held at the local squadron level, and then the winners of this part go up to the next level which is district. If they get past this hurdle the posters are entered into the national level. The national winners in each group receive $150 to each winner in their respective group and $100 and $75, for first and second runners-up in each division.

One of the VBPS members provided a generous endowment in support of this endeavor "Boarman National USPS Youth Poster Contest" and this has allowed the USPS to expand the program to better exhibit the artistic abilities of our future boaters.

The schools selected for this year, by the VBPS, are Vero Beach Elementary and Glendale Elementary.

Members of the VBPS, coordinated by Bev Jones, assisted by Ed Dreher, go to the schools after hours and explain and demonstrate how to put on life jackets. They also demonstrate how to rescue someone from a boat by throwing them a life ring attached to a line and pulling them in to safety.

The kids get a chance to use some of the great drawing and spelling skills learned. The idea is for the kids to draw and write what they learned about boating safety on a big poster size piece of paper. Once all the posters are received they get judged and then someone wins.

The attached photos are the 2008 poster winners selected at the squadron level. The posters they submitted will be taken to the District 8 Spring Conference, which is taking place in Ft. Lauderdale, April 25 - 27.

These are the 12 individuals that were winners from Vero Beach Elementary and Glendale Elementary.
