Glimpse of Gold
Contributed by: Jess Frey on 9/30/2008

A week at a Pennsylvania gymnastics camp included a dream come true for gymnasts from the Indian River Gymnastics Academy. Eleven members of the local girls gymnastics team had more than a brush with Olympic greatness. The girls participated in a Question & Answer session with Olympic team members Nastia Liukin and Chellsie Memmel. The US Women's Gymnastics team took the Silver medal in Beijing. Nastia Liukin is the current Olympic all around champion. Both Olympians spoke of their parents as being important components of their training regimen. Liukin discussed the importance of setting daily, weekly and monthly goals in life and in training. The campers had individual pictures taken with the Olympians.

Several other Olympians were visiting the International Gymnastics Camp, located in Stroudsburg, PA. The camp is located about 70 miles north of Philadelphia, where the Olympic trials were held the weekend prior. Three-time Olympian Blaine Wilson greeted a group of the girls with a shoulder hug. "His muscles were huge", beamed McKenzi Swanson, an IRGA gymnast.

Although the camp program has a strict training format, gymnasts were able to see skills in action during a session when the coaches performed for the campers. "I loved watching the coaches do all their tricks", said Cathryn Prudenti, IRGA gymnast. With all the excitement of the Olympians present, Reva Adams said the best part of camp was "getting my back tuck on beam".

The girls were able to watch the pummel horse routine of Olympian David Durante. Jessica Frey, IRGA owner and International Gymnastics Camp staff since 1999 said, "I was amazed of the amount of strength, poise, and grace that Durante presented."

Meeting and interacting with athletes of such accomplishment has given 11 young gymnasts the opportunity to see that dreams really do come true. Not only did many of these girls return with new skills and everlasting memories, but they also returned with a new hunger and drive to accomplish their own goals, to strive for gold.
