Fine Art Daily - October 6, 2009

October 6, 2009
On Saturday we had finally deposited Tall Boy at his umpteenth destination and we required cool beverages. We paused for the drawbridge at the old Roosevelt Bridge, remembering the good old days when some days we would have to wait for the exceedingly annoying tender on the old Evans Crary bridge from Sewall's Point to Stuart. Though we don't go over it much, the new bridge in Jensen Beach has opened the pleasures of the river waters to more people, too.
It is an anonymous quotation, but I have read someone say that bridges are "America's cathedrals." We have three fine examples right here.
We dropped in at the Pelican Café, a little spot that has plenty of outdoor seating, tucked under the new Roosevelt Bridge. We drank a beer and watched the people streaming up and down the repaired and extended Riverwalk. There were dog walkers, cyclists, mothers and toddlers, and a flock of brightly colored and giggly Martin County High School students who were posing for photographs before a dance in the tawny rays of the setting sun. And right behind them the near-full harvest moon was rising.
Though not the fall weather I was longing for last week, it was cool enough to be sitting outside, along the river, smiling at dogs and babies, enjoying some time with Best Beloved. An excellent evening.
