It's all good.
The views of a middle-aged Florida native.

The looking blues
Contributed by: Jean Crankshaw   on 10/17/2009

I can't believe that people have the nerve to ask me: Have you gone on Monster? Have you checked Craigslist?
Yes, I am exhausting every possible resource I can find. Bring me a website or other resource I haven't tried, please.
I have considered making a sign for myself and spinning it out on a major thoroughfare.
"I need work! Resume available!"
Or maybe "Cleric for hire!" and my phone number.
I see a young man on the corner of Indian Street and US 1 who does a wonderful job of spinning a sign for a place that buys gold. He is the only sign-spinner doing the job the way it should be done. He spins the sign like a baton. No one else I've seen on that particular highway is really doing anything more than waving.
That is the kind of worker I am. I give the full measure of my skills and resources at what I do.
And I know that young man is making at least 10.00 an hour... and building muscle and heat tolerance as well.
I'd love to spin signs for 10.00 an hour. For five hours every Monday through Saturday, I could nearly duplicate my net income at the job I was laid off from in September. However, sign spinning probably isn't the best career for a woman of a certain age. That much perspiration is just not appealing.
I apply to an average minimum of three jobs per day. I have applied to approximately 88 employers since September 15th. I have had three interviews, one rejection call back, two "Thanks, but no thanks" letters, two or three e-mails stating someone else was hired or that my qualifications didn't quite fit.
I'll tell you what doesn't fit: At my age, I am more expensive to insure.
What prospective employers cannot see is how hard I work. The money I save them by plowing through assignments and looking for more work when I am done instead of tending to my personal business or pleasures saves them plenty. I'm an old(er) girl with an old-fashioned work ethic.
My cover letter is replete with confidence. My resume shows that I have many skills. How do I get an employer to see that I am the one they need?
I am not a woman of means. If I was, I'd hire a young gal to dress up like a secretary... and spin my sign.
