Living History
Contributed by: Katherine Charland on 2/20/2008

On one of my rambling walks around Stuart, I wandered into Glass and Treasures. It quickly became one of my family's favorite shops. Ken Glass is more than a purveyor of fine collectibles; he seems to be a purveyor of history itself. He is a retired college professor and a lifetime collector. Many of the items seem to have their own stories to tell. My eleven year old son was engrossed in a hand made miniature model of WWII. My nine year old likes the old car advertisements and the pictures of the antique planes. Probably a quarter of his shop is dedicated to historical documents and paper. It's fascinating to just browse around. Ken's favorite artifacts are from the civil war, he has an extensive collection from that time period.

The collection is so unique, extensive and diverse that even buyers from museums purchase here. For example the NASA Museum had not saved some pictures and press releases so they bought them from him. Due to his expertise, he was just asked by the Southernmost House and Historical Museum of Key West to appraise a collection of all the presidential signatures from George Washington to George W. Bush and many of the original works of Ernest Hemingway.

I love the antique jewelry. It was made when fine craftsmanship was the rule. I enjoy things that are art deco, including the exquisitely beaded handbags and hats from the roaring twenties. When you visit make sure to look at the china and glass. Ken also has an extensive collection of artwork including old lithographs and oil paintings. It is the kind of store where the more you look the more you find, so slow down and enjoy it all.

Ken started collecting when he was just a kid. It is a lifetime passion that may have helped lead to his study of history. He's owned shops for many years. At points he owned four stores at once and at another time he owned an auction house. He has been in downtown Stuart for six years. When you get a chance, stop by and see Ken at 12A SW Osceola Street. Something there may take you down memory lane or maybe you'll learn something new. You are sure to find unique gifts and items that are destined to become family treasures because of their beauty and enduring value.
