Magic: the Gathering Release Events?

An estimated six million players in over seventy countries play Wizards of the Coast's popular trading card game Magic: the Gathering. Created in 1993 Wizards continues to add to the game by offering new card sets three to four times a year. In order to maintain interest in the game, encourage play and reward players Wizards offers a variety of events and programs to keep the excitement going. Amongst these events are Magic: The Gathering release events.

Release Events provide a venue where players can buy the new release of Magic cards as soon as they're available and play right away with other players in their local area. Run in local game and hobby stores around the world on the weekend the new set is available in stores, Release Events are low-key introductions to the cards and a great way to meet new players.

Formats are varied and depend upon the Release Event. They can include Sealed Deck where you build your deck out of a set number of cards given to you at the start of the event and Booster Draft which involves selecting cards from a larger pool of players, usually eight, and then building your deck out of the cards you draft.

Prizes for these events include packs of Magic cards of the set being showcased that are awarded to top players, as well as unique prizes created just for that Release Event. Special commemorative foil cards are given to each participant while supplies last. Additional prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the event organizers.

You must be a DCI member to participate in a Release Event but getting DCI membership is free and easy. Just ask to participate in any DCI Sanctioned event, fill out a simple form and get a DCI number right at the event. The DCI (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dci/welcome) is the worldwide organization that handles tournaments and organized play for Wizards of the Coast and Avalon Hill games.
