"Capt Joel" Kilmer - Big Dog Comics
on 10/14/2007
Saturday October 13 was a busy day on the Treasure Coast, with the Chili Cook-off, Bucklers Craft Show, Orchid Auction, and a small Comic Con in Port Saint Lucie. It was the latter that Big Dog Comics, "Capt Joel" Kilmer found to be most interesting. As Comic shows go Capt Joel has been making appearances, and having fun, and making friends all over Florida for over 24 years. Although the PSL show was small and kind of a secret, it held adventure for many people.
Old friend and actor Joel Wynkoop came from across the state to show and sell some of the many action/horror movies he has so proudly been in. As they have done for years the call of "Joel" followed by "Hey Joel" went back and forth through the day when smiles were needed.
Local artist, Rick Pelletier the Professor of paper Mache production was exhibiting his wears. With his wife and sons at his side questions were answered though out the day as fans marveled at his work. Pieces included crossed Wolverine claws, Doctor Fate helm, Civil War life-size Captain America shield and Iron Man helmet, and Hawkman cowl. Many stopped and awed at the life-size Cylon warrior and Frazetta Death Dealer Helmet in production that was displayed.
Rick was later found showing the hood of, "Ant" a female super hero, to Jeff publisher, writer, and driving force behind the Orlando based comic company Big City Comics. With great titles like Dragon Cross, Tempest, and Totem, fun is just on the horizon for all aspect of fans.
Jesse Hansen of Cadre Corner had pages of art and copies for display and sale. One of his artists was working of a real life drawing of vampyroteuthis infernalis, the deep water vampire squid, which prompted excitement from Capt Joel who is an environmental educator and herpetologist.
John Beatty artist on 80s and early 90s captain America was glad to great all and sign books and was anxious to tell many of his Philippine fiancé that will be joining him, as soon as her paperwork clears. Congratulations John.
As those who know her would tell you, you can expect to see Monica Mallow comic con promoter to be there a smile and a friendly welcome for all. Her cute Supergirl tee added to the air of the comic con.
Alex Saviak artist on web of Spiderman and other comics returned to the area and talked with Capt. Joel for quite awhile on the comics industry and the art form as a whole. Since any good teacher must continue to learn, Capt Joel was pleased to listen and learn from one of comics most dedicated artists.
And comic artist and co-creator of Wolverine Herb Trimpe, along with his wife and daughter, was on stage to sign autographs and do sketch work for the fans who wished to add a piece of treasured art to their collections. Although you can't tell it by his appearance Herb is one of the old guard of comic artists. His openness, honesty, and work ethics were refreshing to witness in a field that has turned into a sport star type attitude of "what's in it for me?" Capt Joel said "Of all the artists I have met in the last 24 years Herb is one of the most enjoyable people I have been fortunate enough to meet." After trading addresses and information Cap told his friend Don Fox "I met the artist and I made a friend" he smiled. Like a kid finding a Babe Ruth rookie card Capt Joel brimmed as he left the con with a Godzilla sketch he bought from Mr. Trimpe.
Although most dealers were disappointed with the turn out and sales, fun and deals were like treasures to be found for the dedicated and patient fan. Capt Joel would like to thank everyone who came by and said "Hi" and welcomes all to stop in and say "Hi' again or for the first time at Big Dog Comics, 4804 South U S Highway 1, the Del Rio Plaza, Fort Pierce, Just north of Midway Road.
