Comic Artist Jim Mooney passes Away

Although to most Jim Mooney was not the most famous of comic book artists, he was one of the most dependable, reliable, a versatile comic artist. Jim lived in Port Salerno, Florida for the later years of his life and retirement. He could often be found just about anywhere around town when he wasn't drawing or sketching. Many times at the flea markets just looking and chatting with people.

He came into OK Comics years ago and quietly looked around. Like a fan or collector he took in all that was around him and after awhile owner "Capt. Joel" asked him if he needed help. He quietly said no and after about 15 minutes reveled that he was in the comic field. This was the start of a long friendship with a good man.

He started back in 1940 working on comics, back when artist and illustrators were not big on telling people they drew "Funny books". He was hired by Stan Lee at Timely comics and they had a good friendship. Jim's claim to fame was his drawing of Supergirl for DC which he loved to do. He also worked on Superboy and Batman while at DC from 1946 - 1968. Also his work on Spider-man was well known. I recently found out he loved to work on Marvel Comics Man-thing, one of local artists Chad Hunts and mine favorite characters to read.

Jim was what is called one of the old guard, reliable, dedicated, timely, and honest. He was generous with his time and always helping the next generation with there art. He was patient with answers and easy to talk to. After one visit of 10 minutes or so you always walked away feeling you had made a new friend, and you had.

Through the years he had always offered to do a sketch or drawing for me for OK Comics, now Big Dog Comics. I always politely turned him down saying I would get something from him later. I wish I had taken him up on his offer now, so I guess my fond memories are a pretty great thing to have.

Jim passed away on March 30. He was 89. He will be missed by many in the comic business. Missed by his friends and neighbors and missed by this local comic store that was lucky and blessed to call him friend. I will read his books again and remember him fondly. Thanks Jim Mooney for all that you did.
