Part 1 of 4 - Why collect?
This is a question asked by everybody about somebody else's collection sooner or later.
There are different reasons and ideas behind collecting. They can be analyzed by the following types. Some people can be more than one type.
The collector: A person who likes what they have, sometimes they read, handle or use their collectables. Care is usually taken. They are constantly on the look out to finish a run or set of items in their collection.
The investor: The name pretty much says it all. Items are viewed in a monetary way. Often an item needed to finish our complete something will not be purchased if its potential to make a good profit can not be justified.
The pack rat: Many times this person will loose sight of what started them collecting. Often times this person will cross collect [example- a Coke collector will start collecting NASCAR if he sees a Coke logo on a few cars] and then cross collect again and again. Sometimes even to the ends of clippings and ads of desired collectables.
Just for fun: These people tend to read and or use the things they enjoy. Gradual wear and tear is acceptable to these people. Often things are enjoyed with out any cash value or long term plans in mind.
"I have a collection" person: Generally these people have been given or handed down their items, often from the "Just for fun Collector" or relative. The constant thought of "this must be worth a lot" is what usually brings them into a store to sell or get items evaluated. They are usually disappointed when the collection is less than the cost of a house, or not enough to put a child through collage.
The reader: Much like the "just for fun collector" is driven by the word or art of comics. Some can barely contain them selves from week to week or month to month with an ongoing story arc. A smile or an excited "Alright!" is common from their constant forays into the illustrated medium known as comic books.
These are some of the types of collectors and the base reasons they collect. Everyone has a reason they enjoy collecting but the idea is to Enjoy. To quote one of our beliefs at Big Dog Comics..."Buy to read, Read for enjoyment, the rest is Gravy."
